This 5-hour trip kicks off bright and early, giving you the best shot at landing some prized Redfish and Speckled Trout. Don't worry if you're new to fishing – the captain's got patience in spades and will walk you through everything from baiting hooks to reeling in your catch. The shallow, protected waters of Rockport Bay make for a smooth ride, so even the littlest anglers can join in without worry. Keep your eyes peeled for dolphins, herons, and other coastal critters as you cruise to the day's hotspots.
On this trip, you'll get hands-on with some classic inshore fishing techniques. Captain Wesley might have you trying your hand at drift fishing, where you'll let the boat glide along with the current while you dangle bait near underwater structures. Or, you might anchor up and cast into the grassy flats where Redfish love to hunt. Light tackle is the name of the game here – you'll be using spinning rods with live bait or soft plastics to entice the fish. The captain will show you how to work a popping cork, a local favorite that mimics the sound of a fish feeding on the surface. It's a blast for kids (and kids at heart) to hear that 'pop' and feel the line go tight with a feisty Speckled Trout on the other end. With calm waters and plenty of fish, you'll have ample opportunity to practice your cast and perfect your technique.
Rockport Bay is teeming with fish year-round, but Redfish and Speckled Trout are the stars of the show on this trip. Redfish, also known as Red Drum, are famous for their copper color and black spot near the tail. These hard-fighting fish can grow up to 40 inches long, though you'll mostly be catching "slot reds" between 20-28 inches. They love to hang out in shallow water, often revealing their location by their tails sticking out of the water as they feed – a sight that gets every angler's heart racing.
Speckled Trout, or Specks as the locals call them, are equally exciting to catch. These silvery fish with dark spots can put up a great fight on light tackle. They're known for their delicate flavor, making them a favorite for the dinner table. Spring and fall are prime times for Speckled Trout, but you can catch them year-round in Rockport Bay. The thrill of reeling in these quick, acrobatic fish is something the whole family will enjoy.
Captain Wesley's trips aren't just about filling the cooler – they're about creating those "remember when" moments that families talk about for years to come. Maybe it's the look on your daughter's face when she reels in her first Redfish, or the friendly rivalry between siblings to see who can catch the biggest Speck. The captain's easygoing nature and wealth of local knowledge make every trip unique. He'll share stories about the bay's history, point out local landmarks, and maybe even let you in on a few closely guarded fishing secrets. With his expert guidance, even first-timers often find themselves hooked on the sport by the end of the trip.
Redfish are the rockstars of Rockport Bay. These copper-colored beauties are known for their powerful runs and tendency to put up a fight right to the boat. They hang out in shallow waters, often tailing (feeding with their tails sticking out of the water) in grassy flats. This behavior makes for some exciting sight-casting opportunities. Redfish are most active in the fall when they school up for their annual spawn, but you can catch them year-round in Rockport. They're not just fun to catch – they're delicious too, with a mild, sweet flavor that's great on the grill.
Speckled Trout are the other headliner on this trip. These silvery fish with distinctive dark spots are known for their acrobatics when hooked. They're often found in deeper channels or around structures like oyster reefs. Spring and fall are peak seasons for Specks, but Rockport Bay's protected waters make them available all year. Trout are famous for their light, flaky meat – perfect for a family fish fry. Catching these quick strikers on light tackle is a thrill that both kids and adults will love.

The fish are biting in Rockport Bay – isn't it time you joined them?
Redfish are the stars of Rockport Bay fishing. These copper-colored beauties average 20-30 inches but can grow over 40 inches in the right conditions. Look for their trademark black spot near the tail. We find them tailing in super shallow water - sometimes with their backs out of the water! They love hanging around oyster reefs, grass flats, and marshy areas. Fall is prime time as they feed heavily before winter. Reds put up a great fight, especially in shallow water where they can really use their strength. They're also excellent eating fish with a sweet, mild flavor. When sight-fishing for reds, try a gold spoon or a weedless jerk bait. Move slowly and quietly - these fish can spook easily in clear shallows. Landing a big bull red is always a highlight of any trip out here.

Speckled trout are a local favorite here in Rockport Bay. These silvery fish typically run 14-24 inches and put up a sporty fight on light tackle. You'll find them hanging around grass flats and shallow waters, especially at night. They love to chase shrimp and small baitfish. Spring and fall are prime seasons, but we catch them year-round. Folks enjoy targeting specks for their delicate, mild-tasting meat - just be careful not to overcook it. When the bite is slow, try working a soft plastic shrimp imitation with a slow, twitching retrieve. That often does the trick. These fish school up in deeper channels during winter, so we'll adjust our tactics then. Overall, speckled trout offer consistent action and make for some tasty fillets at the end of the day.
